Abstract

440,435. Recording and actuating signals on trains. HARRISON, H. H., 15, Mayville Road, Mossley Road, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. June 28, 1934, No. 19164. [Class 105] [See also Group XXXVII] Different signals are transmitted to a locomotive according to the polarity and number of track magnets which actuate a locomotivecarried polarized magnetic relay having an armature consisting of two short end bars b connected by non-magnetic plates p forming the central boss portion. The armature is polarized and maintained in a central position by a permanent magnet PM and when actuated by the collected transverse track flux a block F, carried by the armature deflects one or other of two contact springs L on to a fixed contact AC1. The circuits from the contact springs L include a reversing switch operated by the wheels or by the reversing lever so that the locomotive may travel tender first and correctly receive the signals. The signals may be recorded on a wheel-driven strip, home and distant signals and their settings being recognized by the difference in the number or direction of the markings. Permanent and electromagnets are used at signals, but at curves only permanent magnets are used to give appropriate effects, such as a partial braking.
