440,193. Treating cereals and oilcontaining seeds. NEUFELD & CO., M., 1, Neue Wilhelmstrasse, Berlin. June 15, 1934, Nos. 17779 and 17780. Convention dates, Sept. 22, 1933 and June 7, 1934. [Class 58] Cereals, such as barley, oats, and the like, and seeds containing oil or fat, including soya beans and nuts, are, without previous cooking and crushing or maceration, caused to swell by means of moisture at a temperature not exceeding 75‹ C. and are thrust through the gap between heated revolving cylinders thus being dried and converted into flakes which may subsequently be ground. In the form shown the swollen grains are forced between the steam heated rollers 1 by a battery of rams 2. The flaked material is removed by knives 4. The soaking to produce the swelling is performed with pure water or, if removal of bitterness is required, with a weakly acid or alkaline solution which may be followed by neutralization. Salt solutions may also be used and during or after the swelling treatment soluble or emulsified nutrients or medicaments such as phosphoric acid, lime and iron compounds may be added. Soya beans or other seeds containing oil or fat may be soaked in a 1 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid at about 45‹ C. and then stirred about in the liquid at an increased temperature such as 65‹ C. the liquid then being neutralized and drained off. The oil may be expressed from the flaked material or removed by a solvent. The supply of steam and the peripheral velocity of the rollers may be varied to regulate the heat supplied to the flakes.
