Abstract

439,831. Insulated conductors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC LABORATORIES, Inc., 1033, West Van Buren Street, Chicago, U.S.A. June 16, 1934, No. 17901. Convention date, July 5, 1933. [Class 36] An insulated conductor, particularly for use on telephone switchboards, is made by first coating a wire with a layer of artificial silk or similar fibres which are capable of being rendered plastic by a solvent, such as acetone, and then applying one or more layers of fibrous material which is not affected by the solvent, the whole being subsequently saturated with the solvent for the first layer, thereby causing the outer surface of that layer to become plastic and to exude between the fibres of the outer layer so as to bind them together and to the first layer. In the construction shown, a conductor 5 having an enamel coating 6 is lapped with cellulose acetate threads 7 and is enclosed in a wrapping 8 of cotton threads, the insulated conductor thus formed being passed through acetone to cause the cellulose acetate threads to coalesce and bind the cotton threads together. In a modified construction the cotton threads are braided about the layer of cellulose acetate threads. The conductor may be flame-proofed by impregnation with chlorinated naphthalene. Specification 382,662 is referred to.
