Abstract

439,829. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and SCOTT, W. J., 16, Oval Road, Hillmorton Paddox, Rugby. June 16, 1934, No. 17888. [Class 39 (i)] In electric discharge lamps particularly of the high pressure metal vapour type wherein to avoid dead spaces the electrodes are mounted close to the hemispherical end of the tube, the envelope is formed in two parts in each of which an electrode is mounted, the two parts being sealed together after the electrodes &c. are (i) cleaned to remove traces of oxidation and (ii) coated with emissive material. As the joint in the envelope is some distance from the electrodes the heating of the envelope parts does not affect the electrodes. The envelope may be constructed as a whole and then cracked along its centre for access to the electrodes, after treatment of which the two parts are fused together again. Prepared electrodes may be welded to leads fused in the two envelope parts. U.S.A. Specification 1,877,932 is referred to.
