Abstract

439,755. Thermionic valves; valve amplifying circuits. GREIG, J., 16, Lincoln Road, Wembley, Middlesex. Aug. 24, 1934, No. 24467. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An arrangement for amplifying very high - frequency oscillations comprises a thermionic valve having coaxial circular cylindrical electrodes at least one of which is a screening electrode, and having its input and output circuits formed by conductors of circular cross-section which are coaxial with the electrodes of the valve, the ratio of the diameters of the coaxial conductors being made the same as that of the corresponding electrodes. The valve shown comprises a cathode C, control grid CG, screen grid SG and an anode A forming the outer wall of the envelope. The input circuit comprises coaxial tubes GL, CLI to the nodal points of which direct current connections GC, HC are made. The input from a transmission line PTL is stepped up by the coil L and applied to symmetrical points on the grid conductor. The output circuit is formed in a similar manner by the extensions AL, SL of the anode and screen respectively. An additional extension CL of the cathode projecting within the tube SL permits adjustment of the high frequency potential of the screen relative to the cathode to ensure stable operation. The external conductors are connected through annular seals to the internal electrode leads which may be cylinders or wire cages. The cathode may be pure tungsten or coated with dull-emitting material, and is provided with an internal heater, (not shown), not necessarily in the evacuated space. The conductors are preferably made telescopic to enable tuning to be effected.
