Abstract

439,644. Arc heating torches. GUEST, A. L., Epperstone, Fairy Road, Wrexham, Denbighshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. June 22, 1934, No. 18543. [Class 39 (iii)] An external magnetic field is arranged to pass through the arc loop in an atomic hydrogen torch in the same sense as the magnetic field due to the arc loop itself. In Fig. 1 a single electromagnet 5 is arranged at right angles to the plane of the electrodes 1, 2. In Fig. 2 two pairs 13, 14 and 15, 16 of electromagnets are used, the planes of the two pairs being inclined in different directions to the planes of the electrodes 11, 12. The two pairs' are alternately energized by means of a cormnutator 18 to cause oscillation of the arc. In a modification the commutator 18 is replaced by two rectifiers of the dry plate or discharge tube type connected to the two pairs in opposite senses. In a further modification the circuit containing the rectifiers and electromagnets contain also resistances and reactances and are arranged in parallel with the arc and its limiting reactance. With parallel electrodes, as the tips are consumed, the arc loop moves away from the magnetic field with a consequent increase in are voltage which is utilized to adjust automatically the electrodes. The current for the electromagnet may be derived from a current transformer in series with the arc or in series with a reactance across the supply circuit.
