Abstract

Anthraquinonecarbazole dyes are prepared by fusing pentanthrimide (tetra - a - anthraquinonyl-1.4.5.8-tetraminoanthraquinone) with aluminium chloride at about 175--200 DEG C. in the presence of a cheap, water-soluble, fusible inert salt such as sodium chloride and preferably in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate and then oxidizing the product for example by means of chromic acid. In an example, a - pentanthrimide is fused at 180--190 DEG C. for a short time with sodium-aluminium chloride and in presence of a little soda ash; the mixture is oxidized by means of sodium dichromate and concentrated sulphuric acid to give a yellow-olive dye. The a -pentanthrimide is prepared by chlorinating 1.5-dinitro-4.8-dichloranthraquinone to give the 1.4.5.8-tetrachloro derivative and condensing this with 4 molar proportions of a -aminoanthraquinone. German Specification 262,788 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates to carrying out the above treatment at a temperature below 270 DEG C. and preferably in presence of a suitable carbonate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
