Abstract

Substituted aldols are manufactured by causing homologues of acetaldehyde to undergo condensation by mixing them with an organic amine or a salt thereof with a weak acid. Examples describe the preparation of: (1) butyraldol from butyraldehyde by the action of diethylamine; (2) butyraldol from butyraldehyde containing some butyric acid, by means of diethylamine; (3) propionaldol similarly from propionaldehyde. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of: (A) propionaldol obtained from propionaldehyde by the action of piperidine; (B) butyraldol prepared from butyraldehyde by the action of diethylamine acetate.
