[Class 103 (i)] To avoid irregularity of wear of a brake shoe lining, the surface of the brake shoe facing the brake drum is shaped so that the brake lining when just filling the space between the brake shoe and the brake drum decreases in thickness towards each end. The curved surface A, B, D of the shoe 6 may have the same radius as the inner cylindrical surface of the brake drum 5. The variation in thickness of the lining may approximately follow the shape of a cosinusoid. The varying thickness of the lining may be calculated approximately from the equation tv = t cos v where t is the thickness at the thickest part and tv the thickness at any angle v taken from this part and the centre of the brake drum.
