Abstract

Dyes and mechanically produced effects are fixed in fabrics by impregnating with a solution of an early intermediate product of an amidic component with formaldehyde, or with a solution of the amidic component or both components, and subsequently treating with steam in the presence of gaseous formaldehyde, preferably in the presence of an acid. The fabric may be already dyed, or the dye may be incorporated with the impregnating solution. Mechanical effects such as embossing or scheinering may be carried out between the impregnation and the steaming. Suitable amidic components are urea, thiourea, and their derivatives, and dicyanodiamide. The steam and formaldehyde vapour is preferably obtained by boiling a solution of formaldehyde of at least 10 per cent strength. In an example, a viscose fabric dyed with Diamine Rose FFB is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing 5 per cent salicylic acid and 15 per cent urea, dried, and treated for 20 minutes with the vapour evolved from a boiling 10 per cent formaldehyde solution; the colour is fast to washing and boiling soap. In a further example, a cotton fabric is treated with an aqueous solution containing 10 per cent urea and 5 per cent of 80 per cent lactic acid, dried conditioned, embossed, and treated for 20 minutes in the vapour from a boiling 15 per cent formaldehyde solution. Specification 425,032 is referred to.
