Abstract

A filter-tip cigarette is provided at the end which contains the filter tip (for example of cr<\>gepe paper) with an internal reinforcing sleeve which is substantially non-inflammable and extends at its inner end substantially beyond the filter tip so as to be capable of retaining the glowing end of tobacco if the cigarette burns to the filter tip. The sleeve may consist of material such as paper having on one surface, or the part thereof which extends beyond the filter tip, an impregnation, coating, or layer such that when subjected to heat the material tends to curl inwards to retain the glowing end. Thus, the sleeve may consist of metallized paper, paper attached to metal foil, paper impregnated to render it stiff, fireproof, and preferably water-proof, or cardboard rendered non-inflammable and treated to cause it to curl inwards when heated. The sleeve may also consist of "ivory" paper (thin cardboard impregnated with metal compounds such as zinc oxide and usually coated with a lacquer), or of an non-inflammable cellulose derivative such as cellulose acetate, or of fabric impregnated or treated with a stiffening medium which may also render the fabric non-inflammable. The sleeve may be applied to the cigarette paper strip or tube, or to the filter tip before its incorporation into the cigarette. The sleeve may consist of a single layer having its edges overlapping and secured together, or of a number of layers in spiral or other formation.
