Abstract

436,430. Grinding-wheels. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. March 13, 1935, No. 7814. Convention date, March 17, 1934. [Class 60] [See also Group V] A grinding-wheel comprises a core 5 of molybdenum, or other metal, to which is welded or brazed an abrasive annulus consisting of diamond particles embedded in a cemented carbide composition. The wheel is produced in a mould consisting of carbon blocks 1, 2 shaped to form a cylindrical recess surrounding a carbon block 3, upon which is placed a molybdenum, &c. disc 5 positioned by an extension 8 of a carbon plug 7, the extension passing through a central opening in the disc. The space around the disc is filled with a finely-divided mixture of diamond, cobalt, and tungsten carbide, and pressure is applied by means of a hollow plunger 4 of carbon or of molybdenum with an interposed ring 14 of carbon, the mould being heated to the sintering temperature of the mixture by means of an electric current applied by water-cooled electrodes 10, 11 ; the mixture becomes welded to the disc 5 simultaneously with the sintering. In a modification, for small discs, the core 17 is of the hollow cylindrical shape shown in Fig. 5. The proportion of diamond may be from 10 per cent to 20 per cent by weight of the composition, and the carbide composition may comprise from 3 per cent to 10 per cent of cobalt, the remainder being tungsten carbide, or other compositions may be used. The annulus may be formed separately and brazed to the disc 5. Specifications 349,732 ; 364,718, [Group II], and 419,126 are referred to.
