Abstract
Acid-free solutions of water-soluble urea-formaldehyde reaction products of non-colloidal character and consisting substantially of methylol compounds are mixed with a non-volatile, neutral and easily water-soluble substance of non-colloidal to yield stable solutions which may be used for treating textiles. Suitable substances include inorganic salts such as sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, potassium nitrate or disodium hydrogen phosphate, organic substances such as cane sugar or glycerine or organic bodies capable of forming easily soluble reaction products with formaldehyde such as urea, thiourea or guanidine or their previously formed reaction products with formaldehyde that differ from the reaction product to which they are added. The solutions may be dried or the ingredients may be mixed dry to yield an easily soluble powder. In examples: (1) a solution of dimethylolurea produced by condensing urea and formaldehyde in the presence of active carbon is mixed with urea to yield a stable solution that may be dried; (2) a solution of dimethylolurea is mixed with thiourea to yield a stable solution; (3) a solution of dimethylolurea is dried and the product ground with a solution of dimethylolthiourea, common salt and sodium sulphate and the product dried; (4) a mixture of dry dimethylolurea and dimethylolthiourea is dissolved in water to yield a stable solution; (5) dimethylolurea and thiourea are dissolved in water; (6) dimethylolurea is added to a solution obtained by condensing heat-treated urea with formaldehyde or by condensing the water insoluble portion of the heat-treated urea (mainly cyanuric acid) with formaldehyde; (7) a solution of dimethylolurea is mixed with a solution of a condensation product of dicyandiamide and formaldehyde to yield a stable solution that may be dried; (8) a solution of dimethylolurea is mixed with a solution of a condensation product of guanidine carbonate and formaldehyde to yield a stable solution; (9) dimethylolurea is mixed with thiourea and potassium nitrate or dicyandiamide and disodium phosphate to yield powders that dissolve to stable solutions; (10) dimethylolurea is ground with a solution of dimethylolthiourea and the product, after drying and grinding, dissolved in water containing cane sugar to give a stable solution which may be used for producing anti-creasing effects of viscose. Specification 253,094, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. Dimethylolurea and dimethylolthiourea may be prepared by dissolving urea or thiourea in aqueous formaldehyde and filtering the product. Heat-treated urea, prepared by heating urea comprises urea, substances soluble in hot water such as biuret and guanidine and substances insoluble in water such as cyanuric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers in general to the addition of substances that enhance the solubility and suppress or delay the crystallization or precipition or further condensation to crystalline products or products of low molecular weight derived from urea or a derivative thereof and formaldehyde or a polymeride thereof. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
