Abstract

435,718. Puzzles. GAUNT, C. F., Warstone Parade Works, Warstone Parade, Birming- ham. June 29, 1934, Nos. 19180/34 and 1846/35. [Class 132 (iii)] In a shunting puzzle a base plate 10 and cover member 11 are both formed as sheet metal gratings with apertures 12 so that the pieces 18 can be manipulated from either side by a pencil 21, pointed instrument or by the tip of the player's finger. The base plate 10 and cover member 11 are provided with flanges 13 and 14 respectively disposed edge to edge or with the flanges 13 fitted within the flanges 14 which may be of sufficient depth to have their edges bent inwardly. The flanges may be secured together by indenting or by riveting as at 15. In a modification, the parts 10 and 11 comprise flat apertured blanks with their edges attached to opposite faces of an open square wooden trame. in a further modification, reticulated wire or strip metal may be used. The pieces comprise a pair of square sheet metal parts 18 with flanges 19, the parts tightly fitting together in the manner described for the base plate 10 and cover member 11. In a modification, the two parts may be connected by a central rivet as described in Specification 324,805, [Class 132 (ii)]. The pieces have bevelled or rounded corners and are notched at 20 to facilitate movement thereof. The pieces may be punched from stout sheet metal as sclid blocks 22, Fig. 7, with the corners bevelled or rounded off and may be provided with a hole or surface depression at or near the centre of the piece, or the edges may be formed with notches similar to those shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The pieces may be square or oblong, the base plate 10 and cover member 11 being of corresponding shape. An alternative construction of puzzle is shown in Figs. 8 and 9, and comprises a sheet metal base plate 23 having a recess 24 with apertures 12 and an apertured cover member 25 secured to the base plate by bending its marginal portions or by rivets. The apertured portion of the apparatus may be stiffened by one or more rivets 27 with or without a stout wire 28 The playing pieces are coloured, lettered, numbered or marked with portions of a picture on one or both faces and the solving of the puzzle on one side may solve the other. The pieces may be embossed or indented, which also facilitates their manipulation, or may be printed, painted or transferred. Fifteen, twenty-three, twentyfour or thirty-five pieces may be used.
