Abstract

435,591. Ball bearings. COOKE, TROUGHTON, & SIMMS, Ltd., and TAYLOR, E. W., Buckingham Works, York. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3311. [Class 12 (i)] [See also Group XX] A ball-bearing arrangement, for rotatably supporting a member subject to axial thrust, comprises a journal bearing in which the balls engage the bearing surfaces at three points one of the surfaces being movable to take up wear, and a thrust bearing including a race with a bevelled edge disposed so that the thrust maintains the balls in engagement with the bearing surfaces at three points. As applied to a theodolite, a shaft 1, subject to downward thrust, is guided by a ring of balls 3 which bear on inclined races 4, 5. The race 4 is urged by a spring 6 to take up wear. The downward thrust is taken by balls 7 arranged between shoulders 8, 9, and an inclined race 10 on a stationary sleeve 2. The sleeve 11 supporting the divided circle of the instrument has bearings 12, 13, similar to the bearings 7, 3, respectively. The trunnions 17 of the transit axis are supported in bearings similar to the bearing 3.
