[Class 146 (ii)] A word-forming appliance of the kind comprising a series of relatively movable alphabetbearing columns or strips mounted in a casing or frame having an inspection opening is provided with a friction device for each column to prevent accidental displacement thereof. As shown, the columns A are hexagonal in cross-section, but they may be triangular or rectangular, each face bearing letters of the alphabet, and the columns can be moved longitudinally and rotated. The friction device for each column comprises a spring D<2> secured to each column or in the recess or opening b of the frame B in which the column moves. In a modification, rectangular strips bearing letters of the alphabet on one face only are mounted side by side in a casing, and the rear side of each strip is provided with either a short or a long spring which bears on the bottom of the casing ; in the case where a long spring is provided, this bears in a groove in the bottom of the casing, and may pass through the corresponding strip to act as a manipulating knob therefor.
