Abstract

434,563. Loud - speakers. TURNER, P. K., 73, Osborne Road, Windsor, Berkshire, and HARTLEY TURNER RADIO, Ltd., Dome Buildings, The Square, Richmond, Surrey. Aug. 13, 1934, No. 23278. [Class 40 (iv)] For preventing interference between the waves from the two sides of a diaphragm of the order of 1 ft. or less in diameter and for eliminating box resonance, the rear of the diaphragm is acoustically enclosed by a series of air-spaced layers of sound-absorbent material, some or all of which have openings. As shown, sheets 42, Fig. 4, of gamgee tissue or cotton wool are clamped between light wooden frames 41 and against a fillet 44 in the box 43 so as to be compressed between adjacent frames and also between each frame and the walls of the box. The layers 15, Fig. 1, are cut away to receive the body of the loudspeaker 11, and to form an air cavity 16 of diameter decreasing progressively towards the rear of the box. The rear wall of the box may be dispensed with, and if the sound waves are absorbed before reaching the margins of the layers, a box is unnecessary. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the rear wall of the box and the part forming the cavity 16 are dispensed with. As shown in Fig. 3, the box has no rear wall and the layers 35 are cut away to form a number of air cavities 36 around the loudspeaker 31. The thickness of the air spaces and of the layers 15 is of the same order.
