434,440. Moulding tyres. HERBERT, L., 9, Schielestrasse, Frankfort - on - Main, Germany. March 2, 1934, No. 6786. Convention date, March 2, 1933. [Class 87 (ii)] In making outer covers for pneumatic tyres, an endless band 1 formed of layers of cord band is radially gripped at its two edges 1<a> by simultaneously-acting gripping-means arranged in a circle and is pulled over a rounded core 5 to receive its final shape, all in one continuous operation. Drums 2 are arranged, one on each side of the core 5 and are axially displaced to operate levers 3 and a series of gripping tongs 6 arranged around the inside of the drums. The drums are first moved up to the core and the band wound flat on the core and drums. The drums are withdrawn and again moved forward so that the tongs 6 engage and grip the edges 1<a> as the drums are moved towards the core and pull them centrally due to the action of a guide 4 for a roller 4<a> on each lever 3. A pawl 10 engages a ring 11 to open the tongs on withdrawing the drums. The tongs are opened against springs 7<a> to engage the edges 1<a> by extensions 7 contacting with the insides of the drums. The core 5 serves as a heating-tube during subsequent moulding of the cover. The tongs of each series may be interconnected by rubber gripping-rings 8, 9.
