[Class 80 (iii)] [See also Groups XVIII and XXVI] A vibration-operated rotary display device comprises a casing 1, adapted to be fixed to a shop window &c. which is shaken by traffic, within which is freely mounted for turning a display drum 3. The drum has at one inner end a fixed projection 6 covered with panne velvet 7 and around this is located a cylinder 8 mounted on a rod 5 fixed to the casing 1. The drum 3 rotates about a stub shaft 4 and about the fixed end of the rod 5. A unidirectional clutch action takes place between the cylinder 8 and the velvet 7 when the former is shaken by the vibration of the casing 1, thus advancing the drum 3 in short rapid steps. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which two members 12, 13 coated with panne velvet at 16, 17 are hinged to a shaft 14 and connected together by a spring 15. Vibration of the shaft 14 causes the members 12, 13 gradually to climb up the preferably roughened inner surface of the rotary display drum 9 till their weight overcomes the arresting effect of an adjustable spring 11 against projections &c. 10 on the drum 9. Fig. 5 depicts a further form in which a mass 19 is shaken backward and forward along a rod 18 and by means of a V-shaped element 20 entering holes 23, 24 in pivoted members 21, 22 coated with panne velvet imparts rotary movement to the display drum. The cylinder 8 may carry the panne velvet, and mechanical equivalents may be substituted for the arrangements shown. The drum 9 may be internally illuminated, and mirrors and a lens may be employed. The drum may bear pictures or carry toy figures, or may form a roller for an endless display band. Electromagnetic means may be employed for producing the vibration. The device may be combined with an ash-tray.
