Abstract
432,825. Catamenial appliances; surgical dressings. TAYLOR, L., 3, Broughton Lane, Manchester. May 3, 1934, No. 13343. [Class 81 (ii)] Relates to a sanitary towel, surgical dressing, or similar fluidabsorbing article of the kind which comprises a number of layers of material having different powers of absorption, one or more of the layers acting as spreaders to cause the fluid to diffuse over the greater part of the article. According to the invention, the device consists of one or more layers of paper which has had its absorptive properties increased and one or more layers of material which is less absorbent. The absorption of the paper may be increased either by having its surface broken up by inmunerable very fine punctures, as described in Specification 423,828, [Group VIII], or by passing it over a series of stationary straight edges, as described in Specification 423,834, [Group VIII], or by a combination of both methods. The less absorbent material may consist of cotton wool, cellulose wadding, textile or gauze-like material, or paper which is initially less absorbent but has had part of its area treated by the processes referred to so as to leave strips or areas of untreated surface. The paper may also be coated in places with wax to form non-absorptive areas. The sanitary towel or surgical dressing may consist of a number of layers of the absorbent paper enclosed in a sleeve of gauze, or the layers a, Fig. 4, may be separated by layers c of relatively non - absorbent but fluid-transmitting material to act as spreaders. The layer c may have strips c<1>, Fig. 6, of untreated surface alternating with strips c<2> which have been treated by the processes described in Specifications 423,828 and 423,834. The paper layer may be provided with a backing d of relatively non-absorbent material such as unbleached cotton fibres or impermeable paper, the sides of which may be turned over the absorbent layers. The device may also include a central layer of gauze-like material which projects beyond the ends to receive rings or other means of attachment.
