[Class 131] A device for straightening wavy or curly hair comprises two members at least one of which is adapted to be heated, and each having a smooth substan - tially flat surface, between which surfaces a straightened tress of hair is adapted to be clamped from root to tip. As shown, the device comprises an upper member, Fig. 1, and a lower member, Fig. 2, provided respectively with smooth flat surfaces 2, 1, the lower member being provided below the surface 1 with an electric heater connected to terminals 3, or with a chamber lined with a heat storage material adapted to be heated, before use, by an electric heater or by a spirit or gas flame. Jaws 4, 5 of resilient material, e.g. rubber, adapted to grip the root of a tress of hair, are carried by brackets 6, 7 pivoted at one end of the lower member. The jaws 4, 5 are held in engagement by a cam hook 10 on the bracket 7 coacting with a pin 9 on the bracket 6. The upper member carries springs 15, 16 adapted to engage beneath edges 13, 14 on the lower member, and is provided with upturned ends 17, 18, the end 17 forming a thumb piece, and the end 18 carrying a comb 19 and a pivoted clip 20 adapted to engage the free end of the tress. In a modified upper member, the springs 15, 16 and the gripping member 20 are omitted, one end of the member being doubled back to form a spring adapted to engage beneath the edges 13, 14, and the end of the tress being secured to the comb by a separate clip or an elastic band. In use, the root of the tress is gripped between the jaws 4, 5, and the free end of the tress is arranged over the comb and engaged in the clip. The upper member is then inserted in the lower member from the jaw end thereof with the comb end first, so that by the time the upper member is pushed fully home the free end of the tress is pulled out of the clip and the entire tress is clamped between the upper and lower members.
