Abstract
431,936. Blasting-cartridges. TAYLOR, J., 7, Winton Circus, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Dec. 15, 1933, No. 35399. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to blasting-cartridges of the kind comprising a gas generating charge in a pressure resistant casing adapted to vent the gases at a certain pressure, for example by the shearing of a disc or the opening of a valve. According to the invention the charge consists of a liquid medium including constituents capable of gas-evolving exothermic decomposition together with means for initiating such decomposition. The liquid medium may be a solution of ammonium nitrate or nitrite, or mixtures thereof or mixtures of alkali metal nitrates or nitrites with one or more ammonium salts or urea or both ; or the liquid medium may be a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. The initiating means may be an electric resistance heating device, or a non-detonating self-combustible such as a small charge of gunpowder, or an arrangement for bringing two liquids into contact. In one form of cartridge, Fig. 1, the liquid charge 15 is iniated by a black powder heating charge 13 fired by an electric igniter 12 connected through the screw plug 2 and an insulated electrode 7 to terminals 10, 11 covered by a cap 3 having a hole 16 for the leads. In another form, Fig. 2, the cartridge is in two parts 1, 14, screwed together. The liquid charge 15 is in the part 14 and is separated by a weak disc 17 from the heater charge 13 in the other part 1. Specification 431,948 is referred to.
