Abstract
431,207. Television. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO:, Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.- (Assignees of Kell, R. D. ; 102, Jess Avenue, Haddenfield, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 3, 1934, No. 258. Convention date, Jan. 3, 1933. [Class 40 (iii)] In a television transmitter of the kind in which a cathode ray 16 scans a mosaic photoelectric screen 12, an image of a kinematograph film 28 is projected upon the screen during only one tenth of the cycle of operations, and scanning is effected during only the remaining nine-tenths of the cycle. Movement of the film occupies one quarter of the cycle and occurs during the scanning period when the film is not being projected. A disc 38 is slotted at 40, Fig. 2 (not shown), so as to permit projection to take place for one tenth of a revolution of the shaft 34. During this time the photoelectric elements on the screen 12 acquire electric charges representing the brightness of the picture elements, and the projection is thus cut off by the disc 38 so that all the photoelectric elements enjoy an equal exposure. During the exposure period the cathode stream is suppressed by means of an impulse applied to the control electrode 26 by the synchronizing amplifier 42, and a frame-scanning synchronizing signal is transmitted ; for this purpose a photoelectric cell 48 is illuminated through a slot 50, Fig. 2 (not shown), by a lamp 46, producing an impulse which is communicated to the wireless transmitter 58 and to the local generator 20 of frame-frequency saw-toothed waves. Line-scanning impulses are similarly generated by apertures 44, Fig. 2 (not shown), in disc 38 and are conveyed through amplifier 42 to the wireless transmitter 58, to the local generator 24 of line-frequency saw-toothed waves, and to the control electrode 26 for suppressing the cathode ray during its return movements. The sudden illumination of the photoelectric screen 12 tends to communicate an overload impulse through connection 54 to amplifier 56 and transmitter 58. This impulse is neutralized, however, by a contrary impulse communicated through connection 62 by a photoelectric cell 60 exposed to illumination from screen 12, or alternatively through connection 72 by a cell 66 illuminated by a lamp 68 through a slot 64, Fig. 2 (not shown), in screen 38. At the middle of the period during which scanning is proceeding and the projection of the image of the film is interrupted, the film 28 is moved by gearing driven by the shaft 34, the change of picture occupying a time equal to one quarter of the cycle of operations. Specification 431,258 is referred to.
