Abstract
Substantive stilbene dyes are made by condensing in the presence of alkali a nitrostilbene compound of the general formula <FORM:0430596/IV/1> with an aminostilbene compound of the general formula <FORM:0430596/IV/2> (in which formulae X and Y = nitro or arylazo groups or one stands for an arylazo and the other for an arylazoxy group, with the exception that X and Y must not both be arylazo groups). They may be after-treated by methods customary in the manufacture of azo and stilbene dyes, e.g. oxidation, reduction, alkylation and formation of metallic complexes and yield clear fast reddish yellow to reddish orange shades. In examples (1)--(3)4 - nitro - 4<1> - aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulphoacid is condensed in aqueous caustic soda with 4 : 4<1> - dinitrostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulphoacid, dinitroazodistilbenetetrasulphonic acid (formula given) or the methylated azo dye 4 - nitro - 4<1> - aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulpho acid --> phenol; the first compound may be after-treated with hypochlorite; (4) the methylated and reduced dyestuff 4 - nitro - 4<1> - aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulphonic acid --> phenol is condensed with 4 : 4<1> - dinitrostilbene-2 : 2<1> - disulphonic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that X and Y in the above formulae must not be the same arylazo group and gives an example in which 4-nitro-4<1>-aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulpho acid is condensed with the dyestuff obtained by reduction of 4 : 4<1> - dinitrostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulpho acid with glucose or formaldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the dyestuff obtained by condensing 4-nitro-4<1> - aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulphonic acid with not more than equimolecular proportions of aniline and condensing the intermediate product with the methylated azo dye 4 - nitro - 4<1> - aminostilbene - 2 : 2<1> - disulphonic acid --> phenol (formula given).
