Abstract

430,099. Tenoning-machines. AUSTIN, F. B., 2, Abbots Road, East Ham, London. Dec. 19, 1933, No. 35711. [Class 145 (i)] A tenoning-machine is provided with a power-driven cutting device mounted in a holder and having a cutter arranged to cut or scribe the base or butt of the member upon which the tenon is formed to the approximate outline of the moulding formed on the member into which the tenon is to be fitted. A double-ended tenoning machine, Fig. 1, has feed beams 1, 2 to which are secured housings 3 carrying circular saws 4. Each housing 3 is mounted in a bracket 25, Fig. 5, by means of bolts 26 passing through slots 27 which permit adjustment of inclination, the bracket 25 being secured to the feed beam by bolts 23. The saw 4, Fig. 7, is secured by a nut 12 and boss plate 13 on a spindle 9 mounted in bearings 11 in a boss 10 of the housing 3, the spindle 9 carrying a gear wheel 16 engaged by a gear wheel 17 on a second shaft 21 rotated by a flexible shaft 20 ; the saw may be driven in any other convenient manner. The gear wheels 16, 17 form shrouds to prevent sawdust getting access to the bearings. The saws 4 operate on the work before or after the tenoning operation ; the latter removes the shaded portions 6a, Fig. 3 ; the saw 4 makes a cut 4<a> and the triangular portion 5<a> is removed by the action of horizontal rotary cutters 1<a>. The portion 5 of the tenoned work 6, as e.g. a transom, is then moulded by a suitable cutter to correspond with the moulding 7 on the jamb 8. The preliminary scribing lessens the amount of wood to be removed in the moulding operation, thus diminishing the risk of breaking away. The final moulding operation may be dispensed with, the end 5 of the transom being caused to conform to the moulding 7 by exerting pressure in assembling.
