429,963. Vehicle spring-suspensions. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, and HEALEY,A., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. April 13, 1934, No. 11147. [Class 108 (ii)] In road vehicles fitted with pneumatic tyres particularly the low pressure type the static load and permissible minor variations thereof are confined to the tyres while the dynamic load, when it exceeds the permissible minor variations absorbed by the tyres, is absorbed by a counter pressure generated automatically by the displacement of the wheels. Various arrangements of cushioning and spring devices are described, in all of which an initial counter pressure or setting is imposed exceeding that required for the static load by a predetermined amount. Fig. 1 shows the wheel carried by a piston rod 9 having a piston 3 arranged in a cylinder 1 which is in communication with an air bottle 6 or other source of fluid pressure, the pressure being such that the piston 3 bears upon resilient blocks 7 with a certain pressure even when the vehicle is under its static load. If desired the cylinder may be provided with flexible and deformable air - tight bags such as described in Specification 320,633, [Class 108 (ii)]. Figs. 3 and 5 show arrangements employing a rubber spring 23 and a coiled spring 22 respectively, the desired initial pressure being obtained by means of a screwed end 24 of the cylinder 1. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which the wheels are carried by levers connected to pistons 3 arranged in one cylinder 1.
