[Class 47 (i)] [See also Group XXXVIII] A combined fire and burglar alarm system comprises a burglar alarm circuit which operates to actuate an alarm in case any burglar contact opens, and a fire alarm which is actuated through a retarding device so that it is not actuated in case of momentary opening of a fine contact due, for example, to vibration or shock. Fire and burglar circuits both normally closed and comprising respectively the fire, for example bi-metallic, contacts 20 and the relay 41, and the burglar contacts 19 and relay 42, are energized from supply leads 13, 14 from a mains transformer 10 and accumulator 17. The contacts 19 are connected in series with the lead 14, the terminals 61, 64 of relay 42, the brushes 83, 84 of a centrifugal switch 85, and the lead 13. The armature 44 of relay 42 carries arms 68, 69 and is such that, when released, it will not return to attracted position. The arms 68, 69 respectively control normally-open contacts 52<1> and closed contacts 53<1>. If a contact 19 is opened, the relay 42 is de-energized, the armature 44 is released, and contacts 52<1> close a circuit through an audible alarm 75, which then is actuated until the armature 44 is restored manually by a lever 92. The fire contacts 20 are in series with the relay 41, the armature 43 of which is self-restoring whenever the relay is energized. If an alarm contact 20 opens, the relay 41 is de-energized, the armature 43 is released, and allows contacts 52, 53 to close. Closure of contacts 52 immediately energizes a visual alarm 59. If the opening of a contact 20 is momentary only, the armature 43 is re-attracted and contacts 52, 53 re-open. If the opening is prolonged, however, contacts 52, 53 remain closed, and the latter close a circuit through the winding 77 of an electro-motor 78. The armature 80 of the latter is then driven, and at a certain speed opens the centrifugal switch 85. This acts to break the circuit through the relay 42, the armature 44 is released, and the alarm 75 is actuated continuously. At the same time, opening of the contacts 53<1> breaks the motor circuit. A bi-polar circuit-breaker 93 is provided for putting the burglar contacts 19 out of circuit if desired. Known indicating means may be employed for ascertaining which of a number of devices or contacts has functioned.
