Abstract

429,655. Controlling variable - speed gearing. ARMSTRONG, G. H., 81, Quai Albert, Gand, Belgium. May 2, 1934, No. 13309. Convention date, Feb. 16. [Class 80 (ii)] In fluid-pressure controlling means for epicyclic or countershaft variable-speed gearing, the fluid circulates in a closed circuit between a pump 1, driven by the engine or the driving shaft of a vehicle, a manual distributing- valve 4, and the one or more control-cylinders 16 of the gear, the path through each of the cylinders being invariable. The control cylinders 16, Fig. 5, each have an inlet-pipe 19 and an exhaust pipe 20, the latter being provided with a manual throttling-valve 32, which may, as shown in Fig. 1, be mounted on the instrument-panel of a vehicle to provide the operator with means for regulating the engagement and for producing slip. A similar effect may be obtained by means of a pedal 103 which may operate the main clutch of the vehicle, when such clutch is provided, the pedal being linked to a byepass valve 10 which short-circuits the pump 1. A fluidreservoir may or may not be provided and there is a main safety-valve 27. The controlpistons 17 are returned by springs 18. The epicyclic-gear has three brake-bands and a direct-drive friction clutch, the latter being disengaged by supplying fluid-pressure to its control-cylinder. The distributing-valve 4, Fig. 2, comprises a ported sector-shaped taper-plug 6 in a body-member 5, having, in addition to the inlet-pipe 3 and the four control-outlets 19, a further outlet 34 which serves to put the valve-body into communication with exhaust when the plug-part 33 is covering the lower-outlet leading to the direct drive clutch, thereby preserving the constant circulation. The operating-lever 12, which may turn the distributing-valve through a flexible control, is urged to the neutral position by a spring 13. In a countershaft-gear control, Fig. 6, (not shown), a pivoted clutchoperating fork is pivoted at its free end to the centre of a rod secured at each end to opposed control pistons.
