Abstract
428,934. Bomb-dropping apparatus. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CAMM, S., Canbury Park Road, Kingston-on-Thames. Nov. 15, 1933, No. 31868. [Class 9 (ii)] Bombs or like releasable objects 3 are carried on aircraft in a cradle formed by arms 21 pivoted about an axis 5 substantially parallel with that of the bomb, the cradle being turned, as by means of gearing 7, 6, to expose the bomb for dropping or to retract the bomb within the aircraft. When exposed, the bomb is released by means acting independently of the means for moving the cradle. In the arrangement shown, bombs of different sizes are accommodated on the cradle between the arms 21 and an adjustable arm 22 which carries the releasable attachment 24 for an eye 25 on the bomb. The cradles are arranged in pairs as shown and are lowered together or in sequence by connecting the gears 7, 6 of each cradle to a common hand wheel 21A through the medium of chain gearing. Swinging doors 27 connected to the cradle arms 21 serve to close the bomb compartment on the aircraft when the bombs are retracted. Safety pins carried on the noses of the bombs may be automatically withdrawn when the bombs are lowered.
