Abstract

428,670. Vehicle bodies. CROWE, O. J., 3267, Elmhurst Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Oct. 31, 1934, No. 31215. Convention date, March 3. [Class 108 (i)] [See also Groups X and VII] A flexible moulding strip adapted to serve as sealing and anti-squeak means between parts of the bodywork of motor vehicles comprises a web having extending along one edge a bead portion enfolded by a covering of thin ductile metal. The strip may be in the form of a bead 10, Fig. 1, composed of fibre, paper, indiarubber, leather, or the like and enclosed by a fabric strip 11 which has lapping leg portions 12, 13 secured together by cementing, stitching, &c. The bead 10 is covered by a thin metal member 15 such as aluminium or aluminium alloy, which is folded around the bead with its side edges engaging under the lower surface thereof and extending to the lapped leg. portions 12, 13. The undersurface of the bead may be provided with a groove 16, into which a portion of the fabric strip may be crimped by the edges of the metal covering. The leg portions 12, 13 of the fabric strip are notched as at 14 to enable the moulding to be flexed as desired. In a modification, the fabric strip 22, Fig. 6, is covered, prior to assembly on the bead 20, by a thin flexible metal layer 23 of zinc, brass &c., which is narrower than the fabric strip and is secured thereto by cementing, stitching, &c. The metal layer may be plated or painted with chromium or the like. In a further modification, the bead 20, Fig. 7, is covered by a metal strip 24 disposed with its edges in lapping relation to form a short leg 25 which is enclosed by the edges of a folded strip 26 of fabric adapted to be stitched or otherwise secured to the metal layer 25. In such a construction the lapped portions of this metal strip may be upwardly turned to provide folded portions for clamping the edges of the fabric strip. In further modifications, the bead may be of somewhat triangular shape with a curved upper face as shown in Fig. 10, or of relatively flat form as shown in Fig. 13. The strip may also comprise an extruded or moulded rubber bead and leg with the metal layer applied over the bead. In use, the moulding is arranged with the fabric leg in the panel or other joint which the bead portion is adapted to conceal. The strip may also be employed between the lower edge of the stream-lined roof 40 of a motor vehicle and the top of a trunk or the like 41 on the end of the vehicle as shown in Fig. 12.
