Abstract

428,181. Strapping boxes. PRESTWICH, J. V., Tariff Road, Tottenham, London. Aug. 31, 1934, No. 25092. [Class 45] [See also Group XXII] In a machine in which a lever 30 operates one or more cams 27 actuating the sealing die or dies 22, the movement of the lever to separate the dies after sealing releases the grippers of the tensioning device. The lever 30 may be held in this releasing position by a clip or ratchet device 66. The tensioning device comprises a slide 48 moved to and fro by a hand-lever 52 and carrying gripping rollers 53, 57, and a second pair of stationary gripping rollers 53<a>, 57a. The upper rollers 57, 57d are fixedly mounted on levers 56 and are pressed by springs 58 into contact with the band. The levers 56 are mounted so that the rollers hold the band against movement to the left, but the grip is released when the sealing lever 30 bears upon lateral extensions 62 of the levers 56. In operation, the free end of the band is laid over projections 34 and passes between the die-plates 26, 33 and under an eccentrically mounted gripping roller 36, then round the case, between the die plates again and through the tensioning device. After tensioning, the die 22 is forced down to form the seal described in Specification 428,166, [Group XVII], and this movement of the die cuts the upper band between a block 41 and a cutting edge 44. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the cutter 44 is adjustable vertically on the die 22. The cutter block 41 is supported on a spring 43 and in operation is pressed down into contact with a vertically adjustable stop. After sealing, the reverse movement of the lever 30 and cam 27 raises the die 22 by means of the spring plunger 32. In sealing, the cam acts on the die through an inset roller 31. A catch 39, Fig. 6, pivoted on the base is raised as shown when the lever 30 is in the releasing position to permit insertion and removal of the band, but when the lever 30 is raised the catch falls and holds the superimposed parts of the band in the correct position between the dies.
