[Class 60] [See also Group XXII] In a grinding-machine, the frame comprises two pairs 1, 1<a>, of tubular guide columns disposed at the corners of a quadrilateral and a carrier for a tool head or saddle is vertically adjustable on the columns. In one form for rotary, plane or curved grinding, operations the main saddle carrier includes a pair of flanges 2, 2a, interconnected by a pair of tubular guides 3 located one on either side of hollow trunnions 4 journalled in slide members 6 each vertically adjustable by screws 13 driven from a motor 9, on a pair of columns 1, 1<a>, respectively. The main saddle 7 is traversed along the guides 3 by a screw driven from motor 9 and carries a spindle head 8 which may be driven from the motor 9. In some cases a polishing spindle unit may be driven, as shown, Fig. 2, from a motor 24. Each pair of guide columns is secured to a common base 21 and the upper ends are joined by beams 16 and connected together by a pair of beams 17. Rotary adjustment of the saddle carrier in the trunnion bearings is effected by worm gearing 10 operated from the motor 9 through a pair of parallel shafts 12. The work table 14 is traversed beneath the cutter by a motor 15 acting through change-speed gearing. An auxiliary spindle 18 may be mounted in a pair of auxiliary saddles 19 and actuated by a motor 25. This spindle may be additionally supported by a bracket 20 attached to the saddle 7. In a modification, Fig. 5, a hollow casing 26 trunnioned in the side members 6 houses an electric motor whose rotor carries a grinding- wheel. The member 26 is clamped in adjusted position by pneumatically operated clamping devices including shoes 28 and toggle levers 31. Such devices may also be used for clamping the members 6 to the guide columns.
