Abstract

427,505. Universal joints. MYARD, F. E., 21, Boulevard St. Michel, Paris. April 6, 1934, Nos. 10513 and 10514. Convention dates, April 6, 1933 and Feb. 2, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] A constant velocity - ratio double universal joint, particularly for driving the steering-wheels of motor vehicles, comprises a separate pivotal connection, such as by pins b, b<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, on each shaft a, a<1>, and blocks c, secured to the pivotal members b, bl and having flat sliding engagement with a member such as a pair of plates g<1>, g<2>, which have transverse sliding engagement, as through a pin f, with a spherically surfaced knuckle e, against which the complementary shaft-ends abut directly, so as to maintain the ball at the point of intersection of the axes of the shafts. The blocks c may be milled from solid rectangular blocks embracing the shaft-ends ; they may be separately attached to the ends of the pins b, b<1>, or they may be formed as H-sectioned members embraced by shaft-forks. The two plates g<1>, g<2> may be milled from a solid block in such a way as to leave a pair of strengthening-ribs g connecting the faces. Fig. 14 shows a modification in which the shafts a, a<1> have transverse cylindrical bores receiving cylindrical blocks b which are each in two segmental parts, with their opposed flat surfaces separated by a slidable plate d, through which passes a pin e, of cylindrical or polygonal cross-section and carrying a knuckle constituted by endpieces h which have internal or external spherical engagement with the shafts. The blocks b have retaining end-flanges, and they may alternatively be formed as ordinary pivotpins, the plate d being forked to engage them. In the steering - wheel driving - arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the joint is enclosed in a non- rotating spherical casing l, i, the part i of which is secured to the steering pivot-pins j, k by a complementary bolted cap-piece il. The pivot-pins j, k are carried in an arm h<1> forming part of the front-axle h. The thrustbearing of the upper pin j may be a flat plain one or a tapered roller one, as shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the pin e, Fig. 14, may be in one piece with the knuckle-ends h and of the same diameter as them. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
