Abstract

427,470. Variable-speed gearing. REO MOTOR CAR CO., 1331, South Washington Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A. Aug. 18, 1933, No. 23114. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1932. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises epicyclic gearing which is controlled by centrifugal levers N, Fig. 1, and by slip in a plate clutch M so as to vary automatically in ratio between a definite low speed and solid drive. A sun gear B fast on a driving-shaft A<2> is connected to an internallytoothed ring D rigid with a driven shaft A' by an internally and externally toothed ring C meshing with both and supported on roller bearings on a built-up revoluble eccentric J, G, K which is prevented from turning backwards by a roller one-way brake O. The plate clutch M is adapted to connect a flange K<2> of the member K to a drum F rigid with the ring D. The levers N have T ends N<1> adapted to press the clutch plates together as the levers move outwards centrifugally from the position shown in Fig. 1, which illustrates the low speed position. The rollers of the brake 0 are jammed as shown in Fig. 2, and the gearing is operative to yield a definite reduced speed. As the speed of the driven shaft A<1> increases, the levers N move outwards so as partially to engage the clutch M. The revoluble gear carrier J, G K is thus caused to rotate forwardly so that the speed of the shaft A<1> increases. When the clutch M is fully engaged, the gearing turns solid on high speed. This automatic gearing is adapted to be used with manuallychanged gearing X comprising a reversing- train between the automatic gearing and the drive shaft A of a vehicle. To transmit a reverse drive, the gear carrier J, G, K of the automatic gearing must be prevented from rotating idly forwards. To this end, the part K has a flange K<6> with internal ratchet teeth K<7>. When a gear T is slid to the right of Fig. 1 to connect the reversing-train, a spring dog R is slid into the plane of the ratchet teeth K<7> to engage these teeth as shown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent said idle rotation. The dog R slides radially in a fixed guide Q<2> and has a shank R <1> which is pivoted at S to the shifter S of the reversing-train. The gearing X may be the two-speed and reversing gearing operated by segment and rack selector mechanism V<1> described in Specification 427,471.
