Abstract

426,882. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 23, 1933, No. 29307. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1932. [Class 7 (v)] [See also Group XXXV] In an engine starter, means tending to bring the starter into operative condition is rendered ineffective upon self - operation of the engine. As shown in Fig. 1, the pinion 8 is driven from the shaft 9 of a starting motor 1 through a splined connection and an overrunning clutch 11, as described in Specification 322,329, [Class 7 (v)]. The pinion is normally maintained in mesh with the engine member 7 by a lever 12 connected by a link 18 to a piston 15 moving in a cylinder 19 and acted upon by a spring 23. The lever 12 also closes a switch 39 in the circuit of a solenoid 29 which switches on the motor 1. The cylinder 19 is connected by conduits 25, 26 to the engine exhaust and intake manifolds, so that the difference of pressure created when the engine is running will disengage the pinion 8 from the gear 7 and open the switch 39. The parts will then be retained in the disengaged position by the engagement of an abutment 37 on the piston rod 16 by a shoulder 36 on a plunger 31 carried by the core 32 of a solenoid 34, the circuit 35 of which is closed by the ignition switch 27. When the engine is stopped by opening the ignition switch 27, the spring 23 returns the parts to the position shown in Fig. 1, ready for a fresh start, and the abutment 37 is re-engaged by the plunger 31 under the action of a spring 33. In a modification, in order to prevent re-engagement of the pinion &c., when the ignition switch is opened, a second abutment on the upper side of the rod 16, slightly to the rear of the abutment 37, is engaged by a second shoulder on the plunger 31 until the ignition switch is closed for re-starting. In a further form, the lower abutment 37 is omitted and the solenoid 34 is connected to a second contact 48, Fig. 5, which is engaged by the ignition switch 27<a> when depressed at starting against a spring 51. During normal running of the engine, the spring 51 disengages the switch 27<a> from the contact 48 and the plunger 31 is held in engagement with the upper abutment on the rod 16 by the spring 33.
