Abstract

2 : 3-Dichloranthraquinone is treated with ammonia, or primary or secondary amines, preferably in the presence of copper catalysts, whereby one or both chlorine atoms may be replaced by amino or substituted amino groups. According to examples: (1) 2-amino-3-chloranthraquinone is formed by heating 2 : 3-dichloranthraquinone with a 5 per cent aqueous solution of ammonia at 230 DEG C. in an autoclave in the presence of copper sulphate; (2) 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone is similarly formed with a 50 per cent ammonia solution at 205 DEG C.; (3) 2-dimethylamino-3-chloranthraquinone is similarly formed with a 5 per cent aqueous solution of dimethylamine at 160 DEG C.; (4) 2-p-toluido-3-chloranthraquinone is obtained by boiling 2 : 3 - dichloranthraquinone with p-toluidine, copper acetate, sodium acetate, and copper powder.
