[Class 112] A sewing-machine has an attachment or is modified to effect the laying of a binding ing thread by a horizontally moving needle or the like, this stitch being anchored above and below the work by alternate stitches of the needle and bobbin thread of an ordinary lockstitching machine. The needle 22 carried by the bar 23 co-operates with the usual bobbin, (not shown), to effect ordinary lockstitching by threads 49, 50, Fig. 7. The clamp 21 of the needle 22 is attached to a bar 20 pivoted at 19 so as to rock this bar as the needle 22 reciprocates. This rocking bar actuates the bar 5 carrying the overedge stitching needle 7 causing it to advance and withdraw horizontally to lay stitches 51, 52 over the edge of the material 48. The needle bar 5 is raised and lowered to lay the stitches 51, 52 above and below the edge of the material by a spring arm 9 attached to the frame and being raised and lowered by contact with projections 15 on a ratchet wheel 12. This wheel is rotated step-by-step by a projection 11 on a rod 10 pivoted to the bar 5 at 18 and held in place by a lever 37 pivoted at 38 and biassed by a spring 41. A spring biassed pawl 17 regulates the ratchet. The needle 7 has a hollow channel 46 for the thread 45, Fig. 6.
