Abstract

Secondary disazo dyes suitable for dyeing cellulose esters and ethers are made by coupling a diazotized aminoazo compound with an amine of the benzene series having at least one hydroxyalkyl group attached to the nitrogen atom, the components being free from sulphonic and carboxylic groups. The use of a dialkoxyaniline as middle component is excluded (cf. Specification 403,388). Fast clear brown, red or violet shades are obtained. The dyes: a p-nitraniline --> a primary amine methylated in the nucleus --> an N-oxyalkyl-m-toluidine are of special value. In examples, the following dyes are described: (1) p-nitraniline --> a -naphthylamine --> 1-hydroxyethylamino-2-methoxy-5-methylbenzene (wine-red); (2) m-nitraniline --> m-toluidine --> N-hydroxyethyl-N-ethylaniline (blue red) or 1-hydroxyethylamino-3-toluene (yellow-brown); (3) p-aminoazobenzene --> dihydroxyethylaminobenzene (yellow-red); (4) p-nitraniline --> m-toluidine --> 1-hydroxyethylamino - 2 - methoxy - 5 - methylbenzene (brown-violet); p-nitraniline --> 1-amino-2 : 5-dimethylbenzene or 1-amino-2-methoxy - 5 - methylbenzene --> 1-hydroxyethylamino - 2 - methoxy - 5 - methylbenzene (violet - brown) or 1 - hydroxyethylamino - 3 - methylbenzene (pure brown).
