Abstract

425,246. Printing. EARLE, C. W., 10, Cecil Street, Kew, Victoria, Australia. Oct. 23, 1933, No. 29333. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] [See also Group XX] Stencilling-apparatus.-A colour chart or the like comprises a sheet of celluloid or similar transparent material bearing on one surface a series of panels, films, or layers of differently coloured paints, lacquers &c., formed by exuding the paints &c., through a silk screen as used in the silk-screen process of printing, the celluloid &c., sheet being secured, with the printed surface innermost, to a stiff backing. Rectangles of the various colours to form a paint manufacturer's colour chart are printed on a sheet of celluloid 27, Fig. 15, which is pressed printed side down on to a backing 28 having a border of adhesive corresponding to the margin of the sheet 27 ; to conceal the adhesive, the sheet 27 may have a coloured border 31. Apparatus for printing the colour panels comprises a silk or copper screen 6, Fig. 1, stretched across a frame 2 subdivided by a series of straight or curved bars 3 let into slots 7 in the frame and fixed in position by retaining-strips 8 to form a series of troughs, the silk at the bottom of each trough being blocked out except for a panel 9. The frame 2 is attached by studs 11 to a bar 44, Fig. 6, connected by hinges 46 to a bar 43 across the end of an inclined bar 21, and is connected by a yoke 22 to a spring or weight influenced rod 23 whereby the frame is raised after a printing operation to facilitate removal of the printed sheet. Where adjustment of the frame along the bed 21 is required, a U-shaped member 12, Fig. 1, is screwed to the sides of the frame and has studs 11<a> for attachment to the bar 44. The studs 11 or 11<a> pass through slots in the bar 44 whereby the frame adjusts itself to the thickness of the pile of sheets on the bed. Ink, paint, &c. is forced through the stencil by means of a squeegee comprising a series of rubber tongues 16, Fig. 4, one for each trough, clamped by bolts 18 and glued if required between the sides of a holder 17, each tongue being reinforced by a metal pin 19 inserted while hot or pushed into a hole in the stem, and having a narrow stem whereby excess ink passes into the space thus formed instead of spreading over the tops of the partitions. Specification 393,218 is referred to. Feeding sheets.-The sheets to be printed are registered by stops which are depressed by the frame 2 or by the partitions 3 during printing. Each stop comprises a thin plate 33, Fig. 11, slidably mounted in a sleeve 37 and supported on a spring 38 arranged in a housing 39. The stop unit is attached to a slide 32 mounted in a guide on the underside of the bed 21, and each plate extends through a slot in the bed.
