Abstract
424,883. Cigarette-making machines. CHANDLER, R. J. A., 58, Holborn Viaduct, London. July 22, 1933, No. 20743. [Class 130] A method of feeding tobacco to a continuous-rod machine consists in extracting " shorts " from the tobacco in a main hopper, forming a measured layer of substantially short-free tobacco from the main hopper, delivering or showering " shorts " under control on to the layer, and showering the combined layer into the shoot of the machine. In the arrangement shown, tobacco in the main hopper 1 is fed by a carded belt 2 to a carded drum 3 associated with refusing rolls 4, 5, and is showered by a picker roll 6 on a more or less horizontal feeding belt 7. This delivers a measured quantity of tobacco to a shielded pin wheel 8, from which it is showered into the shoot 9 of the rod-forming mechanism. " Shorts " from the tobacco are collected by a shield 14 and are delivered by the belt 2 and a suction conduit 16 to a compartment 17 of a " shorts " hopper 10, dust being drawn off through a grid 18 by a fan 19. The " shorts " accumulate on a counterweighted flap 20 and are delivered periodically into the hopper 10, from which they are showered on the tobacco on the belt 7 by a carded feed roll 11 associated with a refusing roll 12 and a picker roll 13. The amount of " shorts " delivered is controlled by variation of the speed of the rolls 11, 12, or by adjusting the gap between them. The belt 7 may be replaced by a carded feed drum.
