[Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] An absorbent for liquid oxygen or air consists of a mixture of absorbent substances, either combustible or inert, such as carbonate of magnesium, with a metallic powder, and a resinous product such as powdered resin. When cork flour or soot or like absorbing substances affected by shocks are employed, the mixture is contained in a metallic case which is so placed in the cartridge as to be surrounded by substances less affected by shocks, such as wood sawdust or peat. This case is preferably made of aluminium or zinc and is perforated to allow the liquid air or oxygen to be introduced therein. The cartridge case may consist of asbestos paper or of several layers of thin paper protected by a fireproof substance such as silicate of soda, or potash or carbonate of magnesium, or by a thin envelope of ductile metal such as aluminium. The resinous product may be obtained by impregnating paper or other substance with resin dissolved in alcohol ; the impregnated substance is then placed in the middle of the cartridge.
