Abstract

424,587. Artificial dentures. EDWARDS, R., Argyll Lodge, South Cliff, Scarborough, Yorkshire. Aug. 25, 1933, No. 23680. [Class 81 (ii)] Dentures, particularly those for the lower jaw, comprise a soft rubber lining accurately moulded to fit the gums and a hard toothcarrying part moulded to fit the soft portion, the two parts being detachably or otherwise connected solely at a small number of separate points located at the crest of the gum ridge. In the form shown the two parts are connected by press-fastenings 4, 5, but other complementary interengaging connecting means may be employed. Partial dentures may be provided with two or more lining parts each attached to the hard part at a single point only. In upper dentures the lining covers the palatal portion also, but is attached only at the gum ridge preferably at one central and two lateral points. The soft rubber part is formed on a model of the patient's jaw and vulcanized. When cured by dry heat, an impression of the soft-rubber lining is taken whilst the latter is still in place on the original model and is used for moulding the hard part of the denture ; but if steam vulcanization be employed for the lining the original model becomes destroyed and the lining is mounted on a duplicate model before the impression is taken. In the latter case the models are formed with registering formations, such as grooves, to ensure accurate positioning of the lining on the second model and the corresponding projections on the lining are subsequently cut away. Alternatively the lining may be moulded with a hard vulcanite rim and thin plaster be poured into the inverted lining to support it during the taking of an impression, the rim being afterwards removed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 7775/92, [Class 81].
