[Class 135] [See also Group XII] Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.- Apparatus for use with plant operating on a cycle, such as a water-gas set, the valves of which are controlled by automatic operation, comprises a device which arrests the cycle of operation, gives a signal, or shuts down the plant should one or more of the valves fail to function properly. This device includes the use of a pipe providing a fluid connection between two checking valves, one operated by the valve mechanism, and the other by a control element of the automatic operator, drop of pressure in the pipe actuating shut-down mechanism of the plant. The apparatus comprises a valve a and cams b, c associated with the automatic operator. A checking valve d is held closed only when the valve a has completed either its closing or opening movement, and e is a valve opened by one of the cams b, c only at those periods when the valve a should have properly opened and closed. A pipe f communicating with a source g of fluid under pressure connects valves d and e, the valve d being held on its seat by a lever k operated by tappets a<2> on the actuating rod a<1> of the valve a. Should the valve a fail to function, and to hold the valve d on its seat when the valve e is opened, the pressure fluid will escape through pipe f and the loss of pressure will be communicated by a pipe f<2> to a diaphragm h, movement of which operates lever n and trigger q of a shut-down mechanism of the plant. This mechanism may be linked to a cock r to cut off the fluid supply.
