Abstract

Filter plugs or wads for cigarettes and the like are formed by severing strips from a sheet or roll of material (e.g. cellulose wadding), the width of the sheet or roll being a multiple of the desired length of plug or wad, forming the strips to the desired cross-section, and moving the formed strips laterally from the forming-mechanism. The machine described for forming the plugs or wads is identical with that described in Specification 423,503. The material may be of a thickness approximating the dimensions of the finished plugs, and the plugs may be formed to the desired cross-section by the action of the cutting-knives as described in the above-mentioned Specification. Material of less thickness may, however, be used, the cut strips being passed through a spiral folding device. Specification 421,551 also is referred to.
