[Class 38 (iii)] The speed of a shunt excited motor a is regulated by cutting in or out a resistance w<3> shunted by a freely running machine b provided with a heavy fly-wheel c. In order to render the acceleration of the motor approximately uniform on cutting in resistance w<3>, the machine b is given a counter-compound characteristic by means of a field winding p connected in the armature circuit of the motor so as to oppose the main windings n and o. The counter-compound characteristic of machine b is maintained, and the deceleration of the motor rendered approximately uniform, when resistance w<3> is shortcircuited, by opening a switch 4 to insert an opposing field q on machine b into its armature circuit.
