Abstract
422,393. Air compressors. JUNKERS, H., 21, Hauptmann Loeper Platz, Dessau, Anhalt, Germany. May 22, 1934, No. 15307. Convention date, May 20, 1933. [Class 8 (i)] A multi-stage compressor is so combined with a free piston engine that the engine piston and the compressor piston of a lowpressure stage are connected by a hollow piston rod in which is located the piston of a higher pressure stage. The two engine pistons 2, 3, travel in opposite directions in the engine cylinder 1, and are each connected by a hollow piston rod 6 with the pistons 7 working the low pressure cylinders 8. The high-pressure cylinder 11 is mounted on the head 10 of the low pressure cylinder. The pistons 12 of the high pressure stage are connected by the piston rods 13 to the engine pistons 2, 3. A ball-joint 34 prevents the pistons from seizing. The engine pistons are connected by racks 21, 22 to ensure synchronous movement. As these racks are located inside the cylinder 8 of the low-pressure stage, this cylinder is greater in diameter than the delivery capacity of the compressor requires. A portion of the indrawn gas therefore is expelled through the outlet valves 24 to the scavenging air supply prior to compression.
