[Class 51 (i)] A checkerwork construction for regenerators comprises a plurality of courses of individual filler bricks of H or equivalent section constructed and disposed to provide straight vertical flues laterally interconnected by horizontal parts, the arrangement being such as to provide a solid wall structure. In the form shown the bricks comprise parallel limbs 1 joined by a transverse link 2 which may be provided with lateral projections 3. The bricks are assembled in superposed courses each course comprising a number of spaced rows of bricks arranged with their parallel limbs in abutting relation. The gaps between the rows of one course are bridged by the rows of the course above so that the limbs 1 in the superposed courses co-operate to form solid parallel walls which are connected by the transverse limbs 2. The spaces defined by the limbs of abutting bricks form vertical gas flues 5 extending through the checkerwork and are connected by horizontal ports 4 formed by the spaces between the rows of each course. Each brick may have two or more transverse bricks which may be formed with through apertures.
