421,352. Copying documents. RITZERFELD, W., 107, Lutzowstrasse, Berlin. Aug. 24, 1933, No. 23573. Convention date, Aug. 24, 1932. [Class 100 (ii)] In apparatus for printing on moistened sheets &c. from a mirrorscript original carried by a rotary drum, damping and impression mechanisms are provided for alternative use, adapted respectively to deal with the whole surface of the sheet and with a single line only. As shown, a unit comprising an impression roller 3, Fig. 2, and damping- device 12, both of sheet breadth, is arranged above a drum 1 carrying an original, and a second unit 2, 9 of line breadth is arranged below the drum. When changing over, a centrallypivoted lever carrying a spring- pressed plunger at each end is rocked to move one plunger out of and the other into the path of a hole in a disc 23 fixed to the drum 1, the initial position of the drum being thereby altered ; 21 and 22 indicate the alternative positions of the hole. The roller 2 and damping-device 9 are mounted on a carriage 6 which is moved along a shaft 38 one line space after each revolution of the drum by means of a cab:.e 45 attached to a slide 41 arranged within the carriage. The slide carries stops 41<1> adapted to engage and move the carriage after an incline 46 on the slide has engaged a roller 7<11> on a pivoted arm 7 carrying the roller 2 and has tripped the roller ready for shifting to the next position. Pawls 39, 40 on the carriage engaging notches 381, 38<11> in the shaft 38 prevent premature movement of the carriage and are released by the slide 41. The cable 45 passes over a pulley 32 rotated step-by-step by gears 30, 31 driven by a ratchet 29 actuated by a pawl 26 carried by an arm 25 rocked by a cam 27 fixed to the drum 1. At the end of the traverse of the carriage, a block 37 fixed to the cable strikes an arm 34 which rotates a shaft 47 so as to release a nose 35 normally holding the arm 25 in the operative position, whereupon a spring 25<1> swings the arm 25 out of the path of the cam 27. The carriage may then be moved back to its starting position by rotating a handwheel 33. The shaft 47 may be turned by hand to release the carriage.
