Abstract

420,835. Catalytic heating-apparatus. ETHELBURGA SYNDICATE, Ltd., 149, Leadenhall Street, London.-(Schulz, W.; 5a, Jungfernstieg, Lichterfelde, Berlin) June 9, 1933, No. 16577. [Classes 75 (i) and 126] Gaseous fuel-air mixture formed in one vessel is passed freely over a catalyst located in a separate vessel or a separate part of the same vessel, the air in the mixture being sufficient or more than sufficient for complete combustion of the fuel and the rate of flow being so controlled that heat is generated without initial heating of the catalyst or the mixture. In the water heater shown in Fig. 1, air is drawn through a perforated pipe 8 by an injector pump 9 in the water inlet 4 and bubbles up through petrol or like fuel 6, the mixture being drawn through a distributing plate 7 and over a helical water-tube 1, coated or packed with platinized asbestos. In a portable stove, (Fig. 3, not shown), compressed air supplied by a pump to a lower reservoir bubbles up through a non-return valve into an upper fuel reservoir, connected by a short pipe to a tray containing a layer of platinized asbestos or spongy platinum. A heating radiator for the interior of a motor car comprises a casing 17, Fig. 2, packed with platinized asbestos and connected with a fuel reservoir 12, provided with an air pipe 14 having a flared extension 15 for collecting air when the car is moving, the outlet pipe 18 being connected through a two-way valve 21 and a pipe 19 with the engine manifold 20 to provide for operation when the car is stationary. In other arrangements, air may be forced through the fuel by means of a fan or gas and air may be mixed by an injector. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to British Specification 3984/14 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts), [Class 75 (i)], and U.S.A. Specification 1,860,837.
