Abstract

<PICT:0420083/IV/1> Apparatus for the production of artificial filaments and like extruded materials comprises a spinning jet for the extrusion of a spinning solution into an evaporative medium and a filter member disposed in a position remote from the jet but near the heating devices situated within the spinning chamber. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a spinning chamber 6 is fitted with a supply pipe 7 conducting spinning solution to a preliminary filter 8. The solution is led from filter 8 through a connecting piece 9 and pipe 10 to a filter device 11 disposed in the corner of the cell close to the heating pipes 12. The filtered solution returns to the connecting piece 9 through pipe 13 and is then extruded through the jet 14 to form filaments 15. The filter member 11 comprises a long casing 20 plugged at both ends and enclosing an inner pipe 22 perforated over the lower half of its length. Filtering material 25 is secured round the perforated part of the pipe 22. The solution is delivered first to the annular space between the casing 20 and pipe 22 so that it is heated by the surrounding air while passing down the casing and before filtration takes place. The preliminary filter 8 may be dispensed with and replaced by a heating member for effecting heat exchange between the air in the top of the cell and the solution. The device enables the spinning solution to be heated by the air in the cell while the normal position of the jet at the top of the cell is retained, and the arrangement is such that the jet may be easily reached for attention. The conditions may be such that the spinning solution is brought to a temperature higher than that of the air around the jet. Specification 165,519, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
